Dr. Larry Caven

Dr Larry Caven was born and raised in Toronto.  As a child he loved the smell of cows or as he called it the “farm” or “Veterinary smell”.  His father would take him to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto every year, where they would walk the barns looking at the cows, horses and pigs.

Later Dr Larry Caven would travel with Dr Tom Sanderson to get closer to cows and to observe Veterinary practice.  He attended the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph then crossed the road to the Ontario Veterinary College, graduating in 1979 with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree.  For three summers as a student, he worked for Eastern Breeders Inc. as an Artificial Insemination Technician serving the Renfrew and Mississippi Mills regions.  It was there that he gained valuable experience in Bovine reproduction.

In 1980, he joined his wife Dr. Nancy Caven and together they formed the Mississippi Veterinary Services.  They set up in Pakenham and served the Pakenham, Almonte, Carleton Place area, now called Mississippi Mills and the surrounding Ottawa Carleton and Renfrew area.  The Mississippi Veterinary Services has continued to grow and serve the Mississippi Mills, Ottawa-Carleton and Arnprior areas to this present day.

Dr. Larry and Dr Nancy Caven have been married 35 years and have raised a family of five children – Lorraine, Rachel, Ashley, Matthew and Amanda. Three are married, two are planning to be married the summer of 2013 and they have three grandchildren Preston, Madigan and Brock.  The majority of the children still live and work in the Mississippi Mills area.

Dr Larry Caven has been involved in a number of Veterinary Associations: Central Canada Veterinary Association, Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, and Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and is presently a Councillor on The College of Veterinarians of Ontario.

Dr Larry Caven has always been involved in Community activities including local Baseball and Football teams, the Pakenham Curling Club and as a past leader of the 4-H Veterinary Club.  He enjoys all sports but presently he has taken up a new hobby – Scuba Diving.  He is now a qualified Scuba Diving Instructor.  If you don’t see him in the Mississippi Veterinary Services Clinic he may be under water!

When Dr Larry is not working at the Mississippi Veterinary Services, he may be at home on the farm, where they have a number of horses, the main dog “Max” (a beautiful Golden Retriever), a few extra dogs when the kids are home, a number of cats (“Binky”, “Sophie”, “Mr. Wrigley” and “Abbey” in the house and “Scratchy/ Ugly” and “Curly” as the resident barn mousers).

Dr. Larry stills enjoys working with the clients and seeing the Mississippi Veterinary Services grow and serve and truly be a part of the Mississippi Mills Community and beyond.
