In 1980 a childhood dream came true when Nancy Caven graduated with her DVM from OVC Guelph. Having grown up on a farm outside of Peterborough Dr. Nancy Caven admits she never had any other career aspirations as a child other than becoming a veterinarian. In 1980 Mississippi Veterinary Services was established with Dr Nancy Caven as one of the founding partners in the veterinary practice. In the beginning Mississippi Veterinary Services was primarily a large animal practice but over time has evolved into a companion animal practice. Having practiced out of a few smaller locations within the Pakenham, Kinburn, Almonte areas in the early years, Mississippi Veterinary Services opened the doors to a new, larger, updated facility (the existing building) in April 2006 to better serve our clients.
Dr. Nancy and Dr. Larry have 5 grown children and are the very proud grandparents of 13 beautiful grandchildren. Dr. Nancy is very proud of all her kids and their accomplishments. The four girls are all accomplished equestrians and her son is an accomplished hockey player. All the kids have University degrees in the medical field. The kids may have moved out but the house is not empty especially when grandkids (and kids) come to visity. Dr Nancy shares her home with her cat “Eddie”. Dr. Nancy’s number one hobby (and passion) is her horses which she drives and rides. She also enjoys scuba diving and of course spending time spoiling her grandkids!
Over the past 30+ years Dr. Nancy has spent numerous terms as a board member for the CCVA (Central Canada Veterinary Association) some of which included terms as President 1986-1987. She has also served as a board representative for the OVMA (Ontario Veterinary Medical Association) from 1990-1993 and again from 2006-2012. She is a member of the CVMA (Canadian Veterinary Medical Association) and the CVO (College of Veterinarians of Ontario).
When asked what it is about veterinary medicine that she enjoys the most Dr. Nancy explains that she has always enjoyed the challenge of solving medical cases. In a profession where our patients cannot verbalize what the source of an ailment is it takes a bit of detective work along with vast knowledge to be able to diagnose many of the ailments our patients present with. Dr. Caven’s experience over the years along with her passion for veterinary medicine and desire to always further her education through seminars, courses and continuing education lectures gives her a solid foundation for providing the best care she can for her patients. She is proud of how the practice has grown, the lovely new facility she gets to work in each day and that she gets to work with a great veterinary team!
In 2018 Dr Nancy was honoured with the Golden Life Membership Award from the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) recognizing exceptional contributions and commitment to veterinary medicine throughout her career having been nominated by clients, colleagues and staff.
Dr. Nancy will admit that she truly loves how intelligent, loyal and brave our animal friends are. They enrich our lives in ways most of us don’t appreciate. It is an honour to work with them everyday.
